The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and social enterprise Berdeng Kalabaw signed a memorandum of agreement on July 30, 2026, to boost sustainable waste management practices within the central bank.
Under the deal, Berdeng Kalabaw will collect recyclable waste from the BSP Head Office in Manila and its Security Plant Complex in Quezon City. The group will also submit regular reports on how much recyclable material it gathers from BSP facilities and keeps out of landfills.
For its part, the BSP will push for proper waste sorting and teach its staff about correct recycling methods.
“This partnership makes our waste management work more accountable and turns our sustainability pledges into real action,” said BSP assistant governor and chief sustainable officer Pia Bernadette R. Tayag. “It brings us closer to making sustainability part of how we work, the choices we make, and our daily habits.”
Nadine Coronado, head of partnerships and programs at Berdeng Kalabaw, said: “We want to make sure the BSP’s waste sorting and sustainable management efforts are complete. Every recyclable item—whether plastic, paper, or metal—will be taken to a proper facility so it can be used again.”
The BSP plans to roll out this same setup to its regional offices and branches by working with local waste management groups.
The agreement supports the BSP’s Toward Zero Waste Program, which aims to cut waste from its operations through waste reduction rules, better waste handling systems, and stronger staff participation. This program falls under the wider BSP Greener Every Day effort to build sustainable habits across the institution.
The BSP Head Office also holds a 4-star BERDE certification from the Philippine Green Building Council. It is the first government building to earn this recognition for improvements in how it runs its facilities.
