PLDT Inc. has taken another decisive step in reinforcing its network infrastructure and corporate resilience through its wireless unit, Smart Communications, Inc., which recently expanded its Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite service testing to Batangas in partnership with Lynk Global. The move marks a critical strategic milestone for the telecommunications giant as it actively integrates satellite connectivity into its core service architecture, positioning the enterprise at the forefront of next-generation network reliability and national disaster preparedness.
By establishing direct satellite-to-mobile connectivity, PLDT is addressing a longstanding structural vulnerability in traditional telecommunications: network downtime caused by severe weather events and power grid failures. The trial in Batangas, following successful pilots in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte, demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing satellite-enabled cell broadcasts to send emergency alerts directly to standard mobile phones without requiring hardware upgrades from consumers. This capability reinforces PLDT’s operational continuity strategies while enhancing its value proposition to millions of subscribers nationwide.
From a strategic perspective, the integration of D2D technology eliminates geographical “dead zones” and expands PLDT’s addressable coverage into remote, underserved rural regions and maritime zones. Beyond its obvious utility for disaster management, the technology unlocks commercial potential by supporting offshore enterprise users, maritime workers, and remote industries that previously operated outside standard cellular reach. By leveraging space-based connectivity to complement its land-based infrastructure, PLDT is safeguarding its service delivery against climate-related operational risks while setting a higher standard for network redundancy in the region.
Menardo G. Jimenez Jr., PLDT chief operating officer and network head, emphasized that the investment in D2D technology directly aligns with the company’s long-term enterprise mission to maintain connectivity under any circumstances. He noted that reliable communication remains crucial during crisis situations, highlighting PLDT’s commitment to deploying scalable, life-saving innovations that support business continuity, protect local communities, and drive overall national development.
