SSS pays P205.56B in benefits through July

The Social Security System (SSS) paid P205.56 billion in benefits to members, pensioners, and beneficiaries in the first seven months of 2026, as contribution collections continued to provide the bulk of funding for payouts.

Member contributions reached P235.33 billion from January to July, keeping them as SSS’ primary source of financing for benefit payments and other obligations.

The pension fund posted total revenues of P268.14 billion against expenditures of P212.64 billion, resulting in net revenue of P55.50 billion during the period.

Retirement and death benefits accounted for most of the payouts at P180.86 billion. Regular pensioners received P110.83 billion, benefiting 2.70 million people, while P43.89 billion went to 1.23 million survivor pensioners.

SSS also kept operating expenses at P7.09 billion, equivalent to 24.3 percent of its P29.22-billion charter limit.

Its investment portfolio reached P1.29 trillion as of July, generating an annualized return of 4.64 percent.

Government securities accounted for 49 percent of investments, followed by equities at 14 percent. Loans to members and pensioners made up 13 percent, real estate 12 percent, and corporate notes and bonds 8 percent.

Finance Secretary and Social Security Commission Chairperson Frederick Go said preserving the fund’s financial strength is essential to meeting its long-term obligations.

“A stronger fund means a stronger capacity to pay pensions and benefits,” Go said, adding that financial sustainability gives workers approaching retirement and families relying on social security greater assurance.

The figures show SSS collecting more from members than it paid out in benefits during the period, while its investment portfolio provided an additional financial buffer for future obligations.
