Vivant Water has begun supplying desalinated water to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), adding an initial 5 million liters per day to the system as Cebu seeks more reliable sources to meet rising demand.
The water from Isla Mactan Cordova Corp. (IMCC) is now being injected into the MCWD network, bringing additional supply to Lapu-Lapu City and other communities across Mactan Island.
The initial 5 MLD is part of the 20,000-cubic-meter-per-day supply commitment under the joint venture agreement signed by MCWD and Vivant Water in April 2025.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to serve nearly 30,000 households, diversifying Cebu’s water supply as population growth, economic activity, and climate pressures increase demand.
The ceremonial tapping at the water injection point in Barangay Babag II, Lapu-Lapu City, was attended by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Philip Lo and representatives of Vivant Water, MCWD, and the city government.
The project adds desalination to Cebu’s traditional water sources, reducing reliance on rainfall and other sources vulnerable to prolonged dry conditions and climate-related disruptions.
For Mactan, the additional capacity is significant as residential communities, businesses, and tourism continue to expand, putting greater pressure on existing water supplies.
The project also reflects the growing role of private investment in Cebu’s water infrastructure, with Vivant Water and MCWD working to expand supply capacity and improve reliability.
With 5 MLD now entering the network, the project provides an immediate boost while laying the groundwork for the full 20 MLD commitment.
Cebu is building a more diversified water system before growing demand turns supply constraints into a bigger problem.
