The National Privacy Commission (NPC) and Globe Telecom are strengthening efforts to protect Filipino children from online privacy risks and promote responsible use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
The partnership aims to equip young internet users with practical knowledge to protect personal information, identify digital threats and exercise their privacy rights amid increasing exposure to online platforms and AI-powered applications.
Privacy Commissioner Johann Carlos Barcena emphasized that safeguarding children requires more than technological protections, highlighting the importance of digital literacy and responsible online behavior.
“Children should not have to choose between enjoying the benefits of technology and being safe online. They deserve both,” Barcena said.
The agencies formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding signed Monday, October 19, establishing joint educational campaigns, training programs and digital safety initiatives.
Under the agreement, Globe will support the NPC’s Kabataang Digital Program, which educates young Filipinos on data privacy, digital citizenship and safe internet practices.
Globe may also participate in regional educational caravans and contribute learning materials, including videos from its Digital Thumbprint Program, which promotes responsible digital behavior.
The initiatives will cover responsible AI use, digital wellness and individual rights under the Data Privacy Act of 2012, reinforcing efforts to help children navigate an increasingly complex digital environment.
Globe Chief Privacy Officer Irish Krystle Salandanan-Almeida said effective privacy protection requires public awareness alongside stronger policies and safeguards.
“People also need the knowledge and confidence to understand their rights, recognize risks, and make informed decisions whenever they go online,” she said.
The collaboration seeks to extend privacy education to children, parents and communities nationwide, helping families better understand the risks associated with sharing personal information online.
By combining regulatory expertise with private-sector educational initiatives, the NPC and Globe aim to build safer digital habits among young Filipinos and encourage more responsible engagement with emerging technologies.
The partnership underscores the growing importance of digital literacy as AI adoption accelerates and children face increasingly sophisticated online threats.
