Japanese diplomat reaffirms bilateral ties at 82nd Leyte Gulf landings commemoration

Japanese Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Ono Sho attended the 82nd Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landings recently at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park, framing his presence as a gesture of friendship spanning the political, defense, economic, and diplomatic spheres.

Hosted by Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, the commemoration was attended by Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla, Cabinet Secretary Benjamin Abalos, military veterans, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his address, Ono paid tribute to those who died during the historic battle and honored the service of Filipino veterans. He emphasized the expanding cooperation between Japan and the Philippines in key sectors, particularly security and economic development.

Reiterating Japan’s position as a peace-loving nation, Ono reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to supporting the international rule of law and regional stability. He stated that Japan remains dedicated to strengthening its strategic partnership with the Philippines, especially as both countries mark the 70th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations.

The participation of a senior Japanese diplomat at the historic site underscores the dramatic evolution of bilateral relations from wartime adversaries to close allies. The gesture is particularly significant as both nations face shared regional security challenges and seek deeper economic integration, demonstrating how diplomatic engagement and defense cooperation serve to reinforce stability across the Indo-Pacific.
