Filipino shoppers and legitimate online sellers could gain stronger avenues to address counterfeit goods as global e-commerce platform Temu joins an industry-government pact aimed at protecting intellectual property rights in online marketplaces.
Temu has signed the Philippines’ E-Commerce Memorandum of Understanding on intellectual property protection, bringing another major platform into a cooperation framework linking e-commerce operators, brand owners and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
The agreement expands a network that already includes Lazada, Shopee, Zalora and TikTok Shop. Their collaboration with IPOPHL has covered public awareness campaigns and IP Boot Camps designed to help brand owners and online sellers understand and protect their intellectual property rights.
The broader participation gives legitimate businesses another channel to raise concerns about the unauthorized use of their brands and products. For consumers, the initiative seeks to strengthen protection against counterfeit merchandise as online shopping continues to grow.
“Temu’s participation in the MOU on E-Commerce will further broaden the collaboration among platforms, right holders and IPOPHL on intellectual property protection online,” IPOPHL Deputy Director General Nathaniel S. Arevalo said.
IPOPHL facilitated the signing after discussions during the World Intellectual Property Organization’s dialogue on e-commerce intellectual property protection in June.
Temu, which entered the Philippine market in 2023, said it uses global monitoring systems to identify potential intellectual property violations, including before rights holders submit formal complaints.
Its monitoring database covers more than 15,000 brands and uses over 47 million images and 9.5 million keywords to detect suspected infringements. Its Brand Guardian Initiative also maintains engagement with more than 3,000 rights holders.
The company has separately partnered with the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition on a program that gives member brands an escalation channel for takedown requests, providing another route to flag suspected violations.
Temu’s entry into the MOU broadens the number of platforms involved in the initiative, although the effectiveness of the cooperation will ultimately depend on how consistently suspected counterfeit listings are identified, investigated and removed.
