LRT 1 test runs line under Phase 1 of extension project

The Light Rail Manila Corp. on Wednesday completed the first test run on the tracks of the Cavite Extension Phase 1 as part of preparations ensuring the new rail line is completed by the last quarter of 2024.

The operator of LRT Line 1 said the test run allows for a compatibility check, assess the interface between vital infrastructure components such as the train pantograph and the overhead catenary system, train wheels and rail tracks and train and platforms, including other viaduct trackside structures.

The series of test runs features a second-generation train set and running speed of up to 4.5 kilometers per hour only as part of safety precaution. The Gen-2 train set is the widest in terms of car body, making it the most strategic option to check for initial compatibility with station platforms, walkways, cableways, etc.

Further test runs are planned in the coming weeks to include the other train generations of LRT-1 traveling at various speeds and load capacities.

“It was a proud moment for us to see our train running along the extension line of LRT-1 from Redemptorist Station to Dr. Santos Station. As we near the completion of this much-awaited railway project, the general public will begin to see more trains undergoing test runs and trial runs,” Juan F. Alfonso, LRMC president and chief executive, said.

“These activities serve as a testament to the dedication and hard work of LRMC team, our contractors, and partners in making the LRT-1 Cavite Extension a reality,” he said.
Along with the train test runs, the five new stations under the 6.7-kilometer phase 1 project are in various stages of development. LRT-1 Cavite Extension project continues to shape up as it registered a 95 percent progress rate as of the end of October 2023 for the civil and system works.

“The LRT-1 Cavite Extension is now taking shape. We are confident that once this extension is operational, it will help in significantly improving the train system in our country providing a more efficient and reliable transportation option,” Alfonso added.

Phase 1 covers 7 kilometers of the 11-km. LRT-1 Cavite Extension, including the Redemptorist Station, MIA Station, Asiaworld Station, Ninoy Aquino Station and Dr. Santos Station.

The remaining stations between Las Piñas and Niog are scheduled to become fully-operational by 2027.

The 11.7-kilometer, 8-station LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will connect Baclaran in Parañaque City to Bacoor, Cavite.
