Bataan fish samples test safe despite oil spill

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Monday said fish samples in Bataan, particularly from Limay, Orion, Balanga City and Samal, passed sensory analysis despite the oil spilled by the motor tanker Terra Nova last week.

The BFAR said fish samples underwent tests for taste, raw odor and odor.

The agency said it also closely monitors catch landings to ensure the unloaded catch has no trace of oil. Sensory analysis of fish samples from surrounding waters have also been conducted.

Succeeding third-party laboratory tests for the presence of oil and grease and harmful contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons will also be carried out.

The BFAR also gave assurance it is actively working with partners in mitigating any potential impact on marine life and public health and urged fisherfolk promptly to report any oil slick sighting and to avoid contaminated areas while encouraging the use of personal protective equipment when necessary.

The BFAR also encouraged the immediate harvest of shellfish or fish in the surrounding area and to maintain proper waste disposal and regular boat maintenance to prevent further contamination.

The BFAR said it has not issued a fishing ban on adjacent waters still unaffected by the oil spill.
