In October 2024, SM, through the Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC), reaffirmed its commitment to marine conservation in Tiwi, Albay.
The ECO-STAR Program supports 14 coastal barangays, focusing on preserving biodiversity and enhancing local ecosystems. Key initiatives include managing the 4.2 square kilometer Corangon Marine Sanctuary, rehabilitating beaches and mangroves, and combating illegal fishing practices.
Community engagement is central to the ECO-STAR’s mission. Since its launch, over 300,000 mangrove and beach trees have been planted, and 327 sea turtles rescued and released.
The program also fosters youth involvement through the Youth Environmental Leaders League (TIWI YELL), providing training in marine conservation and essential skills.
PGPC’s holistic approach emphasizes both environmental protection and community livelihoods. At the Tiwi ASENSO Livelihood Center, over 40 women created seaweed-based products, boosting their families’ incomes and promoting sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, PGPC aims to transform Tiwi into an eco-adventure marine park while continuing its Adopt-An-Estero Program to restore the Bariis River.
The initiative, recognized for improving river quality, highlights PGPC’s commitment to a sustainable, integrated approach to conservation. Through these efforts, SM Group demonstrates how environmental stewardship and community development can go hand in hand.
