The International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) announced on Thursday the acquisition of a 27-hectare property in Barangay San Roque and San Andres I, Bauan, as part of its plans to develop a new international container terminal. The strategic purchase is adjacent to ICTSI’s existing facility in the region and is set to play a crucial role in the company’s USD 800 million investment aimed at enhancing the country’s port infrastructure.
The new terminal, featuring a 900-meter berth, will be the largest privately-funded marine terminal investment in Philippine history, surpassing other local port developments. Upon completion, it will stand as the second-largest container facility in the country, only trailing behind the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT). ICTSI said the initiative is not just about expanding their operations but also about catalyzing economic growth in Southern Luzon, a region pivotal for global trade.
“This project will ultimately boost the economic benefits to the country through the provision of efficient port services,” ICTSI said. The terminal is expected to create thousands of jobs and accelerate regional development, addressing the increasing demand for marine handling services, particularly as the country transitions toward renewable energy.
With design and engineering studies already in progress, ICTSI plans to break ground in the first quarter of 2025, with the first berth scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The terminal is projected to have a capacity of over 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per annum, equipped with at least eight state-of-the-art ship-to-shore gantry cranes.
The development aligns with recent trends in the logistics and shipping sectors, as companies increasingly invest in infrastructure to support the growing demands of global trade. As the Philippines continues to enhance its connectivity and trade capabilities, ICTSI’s new terminal in Bauan is poised to be a key player in the region’s economic landscape.
As ICTSI embarks on this ambitious project, stakeholders from various sectors are optimistic about the ripple effects it will create. Enhanced port facilities not only promise to streamline logistics and trade operations but also signal a strong commitment to regional development in Southern Luzon, ensuring that the Philippines remains competitive on the global stage.
