    Telco eyeing ‘5G solutions’ to boost connectivity in underserved areas in PH

    PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit, Smart Communications, Inc., are actively pursuing the implementation of 5G-powered fixed wireless access (FWA) to enhance high-speed internet availability in underserved regions across the Philippines.

    Roderick S. Santiago, PLDT first vice president and deputy network head, emphasized the company’s commitment to navigating global trends in 5G deployment, aiming to establish a roadmap for transitioning to 5G standalone (SA) technology.

    As part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts, PLDT is investing between P75 billion and P78 billion in capital expenditure this year to bolster its network infrastructure. The company boasts of the most extensive fiber footprint in the Philippines, reaching nearly 18 million homes in 70 percent of towns and 91 percent of provinces.

    Additionally, Smart’s combined 5G and 4G network provides coverage to approximately 97 percent of the population.

    Financially, PLDT reported a net income of P18.41 billion in the first half of 2024, a slight decline from P18.45 billion last year. Its second-quarter net income fell by 8.7 percent to P8.5 billion, although its core income, excluding asset sales and losses, rose by 3 percent to P18 billion.

    Consolidated service revenue also saw a 3% percent increase totaling P96.9 billion in the first half thus year.
