PLDT launches relief efforts in Bicol

PLDT Group has ramped up its support for disaster relief efforts in the Bicol region, responding to the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. The company’s wireless unit, Smart, is providing essential communication services to the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) through its Infocast service, allowing for timely dissemination of critical updates to affected communities.

Cathy Yang, first vice president and group head of corporate communications at PLDT and Smart, announced a coordinated effort to deliver relief supplies, including food and medicine, via chartered flight to Naga City. A base of operations has been established in Albay for effective distribution, with relief trucks from the Alagang Kapatid Foundation already en route.

“Ensuring timely and accurate information sharing, PLDT and Smart, in collaboration with APSEMO, is utilizing our Infocast service in Albay, saving more lives through updates and alerts,” Yang said.

In collaboration with Tulong Kapatid—a consortium led by Manny V. Pangilinan—PLDT and Smart, along with various foundations, are providing essential items like food packs, hygiene kits, and medicines to affected communities. Additionally, PLDT’s fintech unit, Maya, has launched an online donation drive via QR code to facilitate public support.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Storm Kristine is expected to exit the Philippines later today, 25 October 2024.
