Strategic partners aim to overcome EV upfront cost barrier in Southeast Asia

Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading superapp, has entered a strategic partnership with BYD to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the region. The collaboration will make available up to 50,000 BYD EVs to Grab’s fleet partners, enhancing access to green vehicles for both drivers and passengers in key markets such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The partnership aims to overcome one of the major barriers to EV adoption—high upfront costs—by offering Grab’s driver-partners competitive rates on BYD vehicles, extended battery warranties, and financing options. Additionally, the partnership will introduce BYD’s premium DENZA D9 luxury electric vehicles into Grab’s executive fleet, setting a new standard for green luxury transportation.

To further enhance the user and driver experience, Grab and BYD will integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technology into the vehicles. This collaboration will enable real-time data sharing, providing drivers with intuitive navigation, improved routing, and enhanced safety features. The partnership also supports Grab’s “Eco-Friendly Ride” feature, allowing users to opt for green rides at no extra cost.

“Together with BYD, we’re driving the transition to a more sustainable future by lowering financial barriers for drivers and making green transportation more accessible to all,” said Chuck Kim, Grab’s Managing Director of Group Business Development.

BYD, a global leader in new energy vehicles, sees this partnership as key to expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia while supporting Grab’s mission of sustainable growth and reducing the region’s carbon footprint.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Southeast Asia’s push toward zero-emission transportation, further positioning Grab and BYD as leaders in the region’s EV revolution.
