Emperador Inc. has made a strategic move into the mezcal market with the acquisition of a 60 percent stake in Mexico’s Destileria Los Danzantes S.A. de C.V. for 80 million Mexican pesos (approximately P226 million). This marks a significant expansion for the company, which already holds a strong portfolio of whisky and brandy brands. Los Danzantes is known for its premium mezcal brands, including Los Danzantes and Alipus, both of which have ranked among the top-selling and trending mezcals in recent years. The products are widely distributed, exported to over 20 countries, and are popular in top-tier bars globally.
The move is part of Emperador’s strategy to “premiumize” and internationalize its offerings, further diversifying its product range amid recent declines in its core markets. In the face of softening demand and a 29 percent drop in net profit in 2024, Emperador sees this acquisition as a way to boost growth and broaden its global presence. Emperador president Winston Co emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the artisanal heritage of mezcal production while expanding its distribution and promotion efforts.
The acquisition comes at a time when Emperador is navigating a challenging business environment, with revenue and profits down across several segments. However, the Latin American and North American markets for its brandy and whisky lines have remained stable, providing a foundation for the company to build on as it ventures into the growing premium spirits category of mezcal.
