MWSS assures sufficient water supply for Metro Manila in 2025

Metro Manila’s water supply is expected to remain stable throughout 2025 despite projected higher demand in the hot months ahead, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said. In a public forum on Thursday, MWSS acting deputy administrator Patrick James Dizon said the Angat Dam, which provides 90 percent of the region’s water, is currently at a healthy elevation of 212.88 meters, surpassing the normal high level of 212 meters.

Dizon said that while demand typically rises by 10 to 15 percent during the hot months, recent rainfall and the effects of the northeast monsoon have helped replenish the dams, ensuring no water shortages for the remainder of the year. He also noted that while the water supply is secure, maintenance activities like leak repairs and power plant upgrades could impact supply during peak demand periods.

Manila Water, which serves the East Zone of Metro Manila and parts of Rizal, has implemented measures to maintain an adequate water supply, including checking over 3,000 fire hydrants and conducting aggressive leak detection. The company also plans to ramp up production at its Calawis and Cardona water treatment plants to meet growing demand, especially in drier months.

Despite the positive outlook, both MWSS and Manila Water are urging the public to continue practicing responsible water use to ensure sustainability beyond the summer season.
