DOTr terminates OTS staff over alleged ‘Tanim-Bala’ incident at NAIA

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has dismissed three personnel from the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) over their alleged involvement in the “tanim-bala” or bullet-planting incident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on 6 March.

Transportation secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the terminations and announced that administrative charges will be filed against the staff members after a thorough investigation.

“We will not stand for any abuse. Any abuse will be met with the same result and the same swift action from us, as mandated and as ordered to us by the President himself. We will not allow this to happen,” Dizon said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to accountability.

The incident came to light after a 69-year-old woman accused NAIA security of planting a bullet in her belongings while she was preparing to leave for Vietnam with her family. This incident follows a history of similar reports that have raised concerns about security practices at the airport.

Secretary Dizon also directed a comprehensive review of NAIA’s security protocols to prevent further incidents. “We are not fooling around here,” he added, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.

In response, NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) pledged to reinforce airport security by collaborating with OTS to improve monitoring, screening procedures, and transparency in operations.

“Our priority is to maintain an airport environment that is safe and efficient for all travelers,” NNIC said in a statement. “NNIC remains committed to working with the OTS and other authorities to provide a secure and seamless airport experience.”

The termination of the OTS staff reflects a broader effort to restore public trust and ensure that incidents of abuse at NAIA are swiftly addressed.
