PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications are set to activate approximately 200 new cell sites across the Philippines this year, furthering efforts to close the country’s digital divide. This initiative is part of the Private Sector Advisory Council’s Digital Infrastructure (PSAC DI) commitment aimed at expanding connectivity in so-called geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
The expansion supports the government’s infrastructure goals and is seen as a crucial step in improving access to education, business opportunities, online banking, digital commerce, and emergency services. PLDT chief operating officer Butch G. Jimenez emphasized that each new cell site brings remote communities closer to vital services and digital inclusion.
With this project, PLDT strengthens its role in the government’s “Broadband ng Masa” program, collaborating with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to accelerate coverage. The deployment of the cell sites is poised to boost the country’s digital economy, empowering millions of Filipinos in underserved areas.
