BDO scales up UTM rollout to modernize in-branch banking

BDO Unibank, Inc. is accelerating its digital banking strategy with the nationwide expansion of its universal teller machines (UTMs), a move aimed at enhancing in-branch customer experience and reducing reliance on over-the-counter services.

The bank has already deployed approximately 500 UTMs, primarily in Metro Manila, and is planning further installations across its extensive branch network. The machines enable customers to perform a variety of self-service transactions previously limited to teller counters, including check deposits, passbook updates, and cardless account access.

“By integrating digital innovations into our expansive branch network, we empower more customers to bank in ways that suit their diverse lifestyles and needs,” said Cora A. Mallillin, executive vice president and head of BDO’s Branch Banking Group.

The UTMs are part of BDO’s broader push toward a hybrid service model that combines digital functionality with physical branch presence. The machines support fast, automated check deposits with on-screen verification and SMS confirmations, real-time passbook updating, and secure cardless access via fingerprint scanning or QR codes generated through the BDO Online or BDO Pay apps.

Industry analysts view the move as a strategic effort to streamline operations and improve customer throughput at branches, while keeping pace with shifting consumer expectations in digital banking. Despite the growth of mobile and online platforms, a significant portion of Philippine banking clients continue to rely on physical branches for key transactions.

BDO’s digital infrastructure upgrade positions it competitively as more financial institutions in the country invest in branch automation and fintech integration to drive efficiency and customer engagement.

Customers can find UTM-equipped branches using the bank’s online locator tool at www.bdo.com.ph.
