The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has turned over a 19-meter fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) fishing vessel to fisherfolk in Sumnanga, Sabtang Island, Batanes to help improve local fishing productivity and safety.
BFAR national director Elizer Salilig led the turnover ceremony. The vessel was designed for Batanes’ rough waters, especially during the monsoon season, and comes with advanced fishing equipment and six small catcher boats.
The vessel was awarded to the Sumnanga-Nakanmuan Association to help modernize fishing operations and support sustainable fishing practices. BFAR said Sabtang was chosen as a priority beneficiary to strengthen fisheries in the area.
The agency noted that only 62 FRP vessels have been produced for distribution nationwide.
Aside from the large vessel, BFAR also distributed 18 smaller fiberglass fishing boats, fishing gear, and chiller tanks for fish storage.
To help fishermen cope with rising fuel prices, BFAR provided P3,000 fuel subsidies to 198 fisherfolk from the towns of Basco, Ivana, Mahatao, Sabtang, and Uyugan.
Salilig said the assistance reflects BFAR’s commitment to improving the livelihood and safety of Ivatan fishermen, who regularly face strong winds and rough seas.
