BFP boosts emergency response with next-gen 911

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is overhauling its emergency response systems to integrate with the country’s next-generation 911 platform, signaling a major leap in public safety technology.

Fire Superintendent Anthony Royo Arroyo, BFP spokesperson, said the modernization will support the unified emergency hotline’s new cellular-enabled capabilities, powered by PLDT and NGA 911 Philippines infrastructure.

The Next Generation Advanced (NGA) 911 system, launched last September, replaces traditional landline-based emergency reporting with a digital network that can handle voice calls, text messages, photos, and live video from mobile devices.

To match the upgrade, the BFP has piloted Push-To-Talk over cellular radios and body-worn cameras, enabling responders to transmit real-time video and updates directly to command centers during emergencies.

Dispatchers are also being trained in medical and basic life support procedures to provide guidance to callers while emergency teams are en route.

Arroyo noted that faster data transmission between callers, dispatchers, and responders has improved fire containment, expanded BFP services to medical emergencies, technical rescues, and hazardous material incidents, and strengthened overall operational efficiency.

As part of the enhanced 911 rollout, the BFP is launching 11 command centers nationwide and expanding its communications infrastructure, ambulances, and emergency equipment as part of its digital transformation initiative.
