Maxicare widens healthcare access for Filipino workers

Maxicare Healthcare Corporation. is expanding its digital and clinic-based healthcare network as it seeks to address widening healthcare access gaps among Filipino workers, freelancers, and self-employed professionals.

The country’s largest health maintenance organization (HMO) said healthcare accessibility has become closely tied to workforce productivity, particularly as many Filipinos continue to face long commutes, rising transportation costs, and limited time for medical consultations.

“Healthcare access is often a question of time and proximity,” said Raymond Hernandez, chief customer officer of Maxicare Group. “People delay consultations because of long commutes or the difficulty of stepping away from work. When care is easier to access, it becomes part of everyday life rather than something people postpone.”

To improve accessibility, Maxicare recently opened nine additional clinics, expanding its nationwide network to 45 facilities. The clinics provide consultations, diagnostic services, and specialist care without requiring letters of authorization, helping reduce administrative barriers for patients.

Alongside its physical expansion, the company has accelerated investments in digital healthcare services. Its telehealth platform now offers 24/7 video consultations, online approvals, and home-based diagnostic testing.

According to Maxicare, usage of its teleconsultation services surged 93.5 percent year on year from 2024 to 2025, reflecting growing demand for remote healthcare solutions.

The company said improving healthcare access is particularly critical as roughly 42 percent of employed Filipinos remain part of the informal sector, many of whom lack employer-provided health benefits.

Maxicare is also broadening its focus beyond traditional medical services through its Gen Zen counseling platform, which offers mental health support as demand rises for more holistic healthcare solutions that promote both employee well-being and workplace productivity.

The expansion reflects a broader industry shift toward integrated, accessible, and technology-driven healthcare delivery in the Philippines.
