Direct flights to spur Philippines-China tourism surge

The Philippines is set to gain a fresh boost in tourism and economic activity as Chinese carriers expand direct flights to Manila, strengthening both business links and people-to-people exchanges.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) reported that Qingdao Airlines inaugurated its Changsha–Manila route on 16 May 2026, with flight QW965 arriving at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 carrying 52 passengers.

The new connection provides travelers from central China with faster, more convenient access to the Philippines, highlighting China’s growing significance as a key source market for Philippine tourism.

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Qingdao, Qingdao Airlines operates over 50 domestic and international destinations, including Japan, Thailand, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Its Manila service complements the network of other Chinese carriers, most notably Xiamen Airlines, which recently added Hangzhou–Manila (four weekly flights) and Chongqing–Manila (three weekly flights) routes. With these additions, Xiamen Airlines now operates 44 weekly round-trip flights to the Philippines.

Industry analysts say the expansion reflects both robust pent-up demand and deepening economic ties. “Enhanced connectivity drives not only tourist arrivals but also business engagement, especially from emerging Chinese cities beyond traditional gateways,” an aviation expert observed.

The DOT expects the expanded services to accelerate the Philippines’ post-pandemic tourism recovery while fostering trade, investment, and cultural exchange with China. Improved access from central and southwestern Chinese cities could further lift arrivals, benefiting hospitality, retail, and transport sectors.

As more routes come online, the Philippines is poised to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for both leisure and business travelers from China, underscoring aviation’s central role in economic growth.
