Globe gets NTC approval for national Starlink satellite-to-mobile service

Globe Telecom Inc. has received official approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to commercially operate Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile services across the Philippines. This permit, signed by NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez, aligns with the government’s goal to advance digital transformation and close the digital divide nationwide.

Powered by Starlink’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network – described as a “cell tower in space” – the service enables voice calls, video communication, messaging apps and SMS even where traditional terrestrial network infrastructure is unavailable.

Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said this milestone allows the company to expand connectivity beyond existing towers. It will bring service to remote communities and disaster-affected areas, supporting both daily use and emergency response. As the first commercially authorized satellite-to-mobile service in the country, it acts as a critical safety net during power outages, natural disasters or when ground networks fail.

The technology has already been tested during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani. The deployment provided reliable communications to over 150,000 people in the hardest-hit zones, demonstrating its value for coordinating relief efforts and keeping communities connected.

This development strengthens Globe’s role in expanding digital inclusion and business continuity across the nation, ensuring connectivity is accessible to all Filipinos regardless of location.
