DENR honors late marine biologist Dr. Kent Carpenter as key figure in Philippine marine conservation

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the global marine science community following the passing of world-renowned marine biologist Dr. Kent E. Carpenter, whose groundbreaking work greatly advanced the protection of the Philippines’ diverse marine life.

In a statement, DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna paid tribute to Dr. Carpenter’s decades of close collaboration with the Philippines, noting that his work laid critical scientific groundwork for the country’s marine conservation efforts. Working alongside Filipino scientists and institutions, including the late National Scientist and former DENR Secretary Dr. Angel C. Alcala, Dr. Carpenter helped document the country’s vast marine resources.

His most notable research focused on sites such as the Tubbataha Reefs, providing evidence of their exceptional ecological value and supporting the area’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also led studies that established the Verde Island Passage as the world’s “Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity,” drawing global attention to this vital marine region. Beyond field research, Dr. Carpenter served as an expert witness in the landmark South China Sea Arbitration, presenting scientific findings on the harm caused by dredging and coral reef destruction to show how science upholds international environmental rules.

The DENR confirmed that Dr. Carpenter’s work remains a guide for managing marine protected areas, sustaining fisheries, and protecting biodiversity. Secretary Cuna added that the department will provide appropriate support to Dr. Carpenter’s family as a tribute to his service, noting that his dedication to science and Philippine marine research leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to drive efforts to safeguard the country’s seas for generations to come.
