Domestic travel data encourages AirAsia to widen flight operations

AirAsia Philippines on Tuesday plans the reopening of domestic flights to cater to the growing demand for travel within the country.

“We are looking at reopening Zamboanga, General Santos and Dumaguete. Those are our priorities,” Ricky Isla, chief executive of AirAsia Philippine said.

“We’re also doing market scoping right now,” he quickly added.

Isla highlighted the significant growth in passenger numbers to Boracay, one of AirAsia’s popular destinations.

“We have the most number of flights to Boracay of 15 to 17 roundtrips per day,” he said.

The budget airline has already flown more than 1.1 million passengers to Boracay from January to August this year.

In 2023, more than 1.3 million guests flew and visited the island following the opening of AirAsia flights from Clark and Cebu.

In 2019, more than 450,000 guests flew to the island on AirAsia flights. During the pandemic in 2020, this reduced to 81,000, but recovered in 2021 with 202,000, and more than 610,000 in 2022.

The airline flies to Boracay (Caticlan) via Manila, Clark and Cebu. Daily flights from Clark International Airport to Boracay are the most affordable, costing only P641.

AirAsia flies to 12 domestic and 13 international destinations as of April 2024.
