The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) on Monday announced an initial indemnity of P93.8 million to support over 10,000 insured farmers impacted by Typhoon Julian.
In a report to Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr., PCIC president Jovy Bernabe confirmed that 10,781 farmers in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Region I, and Region II will receive compensation for damage to rice, corn, and high-value crops.
“Immediate indemnification is crucial to restore our farmers’ financial health and facilitate their recovery from this calamity,” said Secretary Tiu Laurel. He emphasized that fast-tracking insurance claims would build confidence in the PCIC and attract more investment in agriculture.
Among the affected, 6,585 farmers were from Region I, which suffered approximately P62.3 million in crop damage, primarily in rice farming (P51.3 million). The regions impacted include Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, and parts of Region II, such as Batanes and Cagayan.
Bernabe also indicated that strict instructions have been issued to staff to expedite the processing of claims for the affected farmers.
