VCT welcomes first gearless vessel, boosting Iloilo’s regional trade connectivity

The Visayas Container Terminal (VCT) in Iloilo, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), marked a significant milestone with the inaugural arrival of the MV Otana Bhum, a gearless vessel operated by Regional Container Lines (RCL) on 9 January 2025. The Otana Bhum, with a length of 147 meters and a capacity of 1,022 TEUs, is part of the RCL Singapore-Philippines 6 (RSP6) service, connecting key ports across Singapore, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Cebu, and Tagoloan.

This development underscores VCT’s enhanced operational capabilities, following the September 2024 delivery of two state-of-the-art mobile harbor cranes (MHCs). These cranes are designed to accommodate larger vessels, cementing VCT’s ability to handle the latest shipping demands and reducing dependence on transshipment ports.

John Largo, VCT CEO, highlighted the port’s growing importance in the region, emphasizing how this new capability will foster economic growth and strengthen Iloilo’s position as a critical trade hub. The terminal’s upgraded facilities, backed by ICTSI’s ongoing investments, are positioning Iloilo as a premier international gateway, streamlining global trade flows and providing direct access to global markets for the Visayas region.

This milestone sets the stage for greater regional market expansion, particularly in agriculture and fisheries exports, thanks to the terminal’s strategic location and robust road network that supports Western Visayas’ economic growth.
