SMC backs DOTR review of cashless tolling policy

SMC Infrastructure on Monday expressed support for the Department of Transportation’s (DOTR) decision to reassess the implementation of cashless toll collection across expressways. Acknowledging the new leadership’s need to evaluate the policy, the company emphasized the importance of a seamless transition to cashless systems to improve the toll experience for motorists.

Since the policy’s introduction five years ago, SMC highlighted the collaborative effort between government and the private sector to enhance the electronic toll collection (ETC) system, focusing on interoperability across expressways. The company said the full adoption of a cashless, contactless system is essential for seamless integration between toll operators.

“We understand the need to ensure that any transition to cashless tolling is seamless and truly beneficial to the public. When implemented effectively, it enhances convenience, safety, and efficiency for everyone on the road,” said SMC, underlining that cashless tolling eases congestion, shortens travel times, and supports businesses reliant on efficient road networks.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the DOTR and other stakeholders to refine and enhance the system, ensuring it serves the best interests of all road users.

This development comes in light of newly appointed Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon’s earlier directive for the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to suspend the mandatory cashless toll collection slated for 15 March this year. The TRB had initially planned to resume the system after a suspension last September due to technical difficulties.
