The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has started the construction of the P664.75-million Bayuyan small reservoir irrigation project (SRIP) in President Roxas, Capiz.
The facility covers 594 hectares of agricultural land on eight barangays in the municipality of President Roxas that include Bayuyan, Badiangon, Culilang, Goce, Carmencita, Cubay, Ibaca and Sto. Niño and benefits 540 farmers.
The project provides year-round irrigation to local farming communities and such incidental benefits as flood control, environmental and watershed management, agro-tourism promotion and aquaculture development, among others. It is seen completed by December 2025.
NIA said project acting administrator Eddie Guillen led the groundbreaking and capsule-laying ceremony of the Bayuyan SRIP last week.
NIA is lead government agency in developing sources of water for irrigation and has partnered with both private firms and government offices alike.
Among the recent value-adding projects applied to irrigation systems include the installation of floating solar power plants and run-of-river hydro power projects.
