NTT WE Marine expands PH submarine cable operations

Japan’s NTT World Engineering Marine Corporation (NTT WE Marine) is expanding its operations in the Philippines to meet the increasing demand for submarine cable installation and maintenance in the region. In a move that underscores its long-term commitment to Southeast Asia, the company is set to launch a new submarine telecommunications cable laying vessel, the CS VEGA II, in April this year.

The CS VEGA II, which will be registered under the Philippine flag, is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting both domestic and international submarine cable operations, specifically in maintaining essential telecommunications infrastructure across the Philippines and neighboring waters. The vessel will be operated by Filipino personnel, with both Filipino and Japanese engineers overseeing the operational tasks.

Mamoru Watanabe, president and CEO of NTT WE Marine, highlighted the growing opportunities in the Philippines. He expressed confidence in the region’s potential, citing heightened global demand for submarine cable services, driven by increasing geopolitical instability and the critical role telecommunications infrastructure plays in global security.

“There’s a lot of opportunity in the Philippines, I’m positive about it. The demand for submarine cables around the world is higher, and the Philippines is crucial for economic development. Our role in maintaining submarine cables here directly impacts the country’s economic growth,” Watanabe said.

The company’s investment in the Philippines is not only about expanding its fleet but also reinforcing its partnerships with local telecommunications giants. Menardo Jimenez Jr., chief operating officer of PLDT Inc., lauded NTT WE Marine’s contribution to the maintenance and repair of submarine cables, emphasizing the strong working relationship between the two companies.

“We’ve just signed a three-year contract with NTT Marine to handle the repair and maintenance of our submarine cables. Given their upgraded facilities, including the new ship, we’re confident in continuing our partnership with them,” Jimenez said.

NTT WE Marine’s expansion comes at a significant time, as the company marks the 25th anniversary of its operations in the Philippines, where it has consistently supported the country’s telecommunications infrastructure. With the introduction of the CS VEGA II and ongoing investments, NTT WE Marine is poised to continue its vital role in sustaining and enhancing the region’s submarine cable networks, fostering both technological growth and economic development in the Philippines.
