NAIA upgrades curbside safety measures at Terminals 1 and 2

New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) has begun an audit of all security bollards and is redesigning the departure passenger drop-off zones at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminals 1 and 2 to enhance curbside safety for the traveling public.

NNIC, which took over operations of NAIA in September 2024 under a public-private partnership, said the audit will assess the need for reinforcements—such as deeper foundations or structural upgrades—to bollards first installed in 2019. These barriers are crucial in protecting high foot-traffic areas from potential vehicular threats.

In addition to the bollard review, NNIC is overhauling the existing diagonal passenger drop-off layout, in place prior to its management, and replacing it with a safer, parallel unloading setup. This change is expected to offer an added layer of security for passengers, well-wishers, and airport personnel at the terminal curbside.

“This was a serious incident, and we are treating it with the urgency it deserves. While safeguards were already in place, we recognize that there is always room to improve,” NNIC said in a statement. “We are taking concrete steps to help ensure incidents like this do not happen again.”

The measures are part of NNIC’s broader commitment to modernize the country’s main international gateway and prioritize the safety and convenience of the traveling public.
