DA steps up effort to modernizes livestock, feed sectors

SAN JOSE, Batangas — The Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying efforts to modernize and safeguard the country’s livestock, feed mill, and gamefowl industries, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said Thursday, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s goal of achieving food security and rural development.

Speaking before stakeholders at the Philippine Livestock, Feed Mill, and Gamefowl Congress in this town known as the country’s “Egg Basket,” the DA chief highlighted the urgency of building a more resilient and productive agriculture sector amid climate challenges, supply chain disruptions, and global competition.

“Through the Department of Agriculture’s INSPIRE program, expanded livestock insurance, and stronger disease control measures for African Swine Fever and avian influenza, we are taking concrete steps to modernize and protect the industry,” he said. “But government action alone is not enough. We need your partnership.”

Tiu Laurel cited the critical role of feed millers in supporting animal health, generating rural employment, and creating a stable market for local agricultural commodities like corn. “As you face rising costs and supply bottlenecks, the DA supports innovation in local feed ingredients and more sustainable production practices,” he added.

Tiu Laurel also acknowledged the gamefowl industry, describing it as a vibrant part of the rural economy and a keeper of cultural heritage. As the sector evolves, he said, the government is ready to work with breeders to professionalize operations and ensure responsible, science-based animal care.

The livestock and poultry sectors were valued at P790 billion last year, or around 3 percent of gross domestic product. Highlighting Batangas’ leading role in livestock and feed production, he credited its communities for their resilience and contribution to agricultural progress.

“More than its infrastructure, Batangas is defined by its resilient and hardworking people. This spirit is what drives our agriculture sector forward,” he said. He closed by urging industry players to invest in research, empower farmers, and drive innovation. “Let this congress be a platform for collaboration, innovation, and action,” he said.
