Manila Water completes ₱158M safety upgrade for key facilities

Manila Water Co. Inc. has completed a ₱158.16-million lightning and surge protection upgrade across eight key facilities within the San Juan Grid, reinforcing the safety and operational resilience of its critical water infrastructure.

The company said Tuesday that the comprehensive tech-safety project is designed to mitigate electrical hazards, reduce equipment downtime, and extend the lifespan of essential assets, delivering long-term cost efficiency and improved regulatory compliance.

Covered under the initiative are major pumping stations including Cubao, Balara (PS 1 and 2), Maybunga, N. Domingo (PS 1 and 2), Pasig, and San Juan (PS 1). The project includes the deployment of static dissipating air terminal lightning protection systems, transient voltage surge suppressors, and enhanced grounding systems—each aimed at preventing infrastructure damage caused by lightning strikes and power surges.

“This investment is a proactive measure to safeguard our facilities, our personnel, and the communities we serve,” said Jeric Sevilla, director for corporate communications affairs at Manila Water. “By enhancing the resilience of our pumping stations, we are ensuring the continuity of water service even in the face of extreme weather events and electrical disturbances.”

The initiative reflects the company’s focus on infrastructure risk management and service continuity, particularly as climate-related electrical disruptions become more frequent. The enhanced safeguards also support Manila Water’s compliance with modern safety and utility standards.

Manila Water serves over seven million residents across Metro Manila’s East Zone and Rizal province, including key cities such as Makati, Pasig, Marikina, Taguig, and Quezon City.
