Prime Infra commits to 2GW PSH completion under GEA3

Prime Infrastructure Capital Corp. (Prime Infra) affirmed the assured completion of its 2,000 MW pumped storage hydro (PSH) projects awarded under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) third Green Energy Auction (GEA3), representing nearly one-third of the 6,680.887 MW capacity offered.

The DOE confirmed on Wednesday the inclusion of Prime Infra’s 600MW Wawa and 1,400MW Pakil PSH projects in its formal notice of award. Both projects—targeted for 2030 completion—have secured certificates of energy projects of national significance and green lane endorsements, accelerating their regulatory and permitting timelines.

“These projects not only support decarbonization but are vital to stabilizing power generation costs and enhancing energy security,” said Prime Infra president and CEO Guillaume Lucci, commending the DOE’s initiative.

Policy-wise, the development aligns with the DOE’s strategy to advance grid resilience through energy storage and maximize indigenous renewable capacity. GEA3 offers fixed power rate incentives to developers who bid below set reserve prices, with Prime Infra emerging as the largest winner among seven participating PSH, hydro, and geothermal firms.

The Wawa and Pakil PSH systems will deliver a combined energy storage capacity of 20,000 MWh daily —positioning them among the largest globally — underscoring the country’s shift to long-duration storage solutions within its clean energy roadmap.
