Meralco unit commissions 100 MW ancillary power plant in Singapore

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) subsidiary Pacific Light Power Pte Ltd. (PLP) based in Singapore has commissioned a 100-megawatt (MW) fast-start ancillary services facility on Jurong Island, boosting its commercial capabilities in the city-state’s highly competitive energy market.

The new plant enhances PLP’s ability to deliver rapid-response power during unplanned outages and system disturbances, supplementing its existing 830 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant operating since 2014.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to investing in high-efficiency, future-ready technologies,” said Emmanuel Rubio, MGen president and CEO. “Through PLP, we are proud to contribute to Singapore’s energy security while expanding our regional footprint.”

The project marks a strategic enhancement in PLP’s operational resilience and reliability offerings, aligning with Singapore’s push for greater grid stability. PLP, majority-owned by MGen (58 percent) with a 42 percent stake held by Hong Kong-based First Pacific, is also advancing a 670 MW hydrogen-ready CCGT plant on the island—set to include Singapore’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and targeted for completion by January 2029.

This international expansion complements MGen’s ongoing renewable energy developments in the Philippines, notably its landmark 3,500 MW solar and 4,500 MWh BESS project in Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, slated to be the world’s largest of its kind.
