Philippine innovation reshapes global teacher training

Far Eastern University (FEU), through its affiliated non-profit Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED), is at the forefront of a global movement to transform teacher development, originating from its Morayta campus in Manila and now influencing education systems in 29 countries across the Global South.

This transformation centers on TPD@Scale, a Philippine-developed framework for Teacher Professional Development (TPD) designed to deliver equitable, scalable, and context-sensitive training for educators—particularly in resource-constrained environments. Since its launch in 2018 with support from the International Development Research Centre of Canada, TPD@Scale has been implemented in countries like Ecuador, Ghana, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan, and is projected to impact over three million teachers and 50 million learners by 2026.

FEU’s role is more than supportive—it has been foundational. The university’s commitment to innovation, inclusion, and access helped incubate early models of TPD@Scale, including two Philippine-based versions that now inform global best practices. Initiatives like InnoSpace, FEU High School’s creative learning lab, exemplify the values at the core of TPD@Scale.

FIT-ED executive director Victoria Tinio underscores the synergy: “The work we do at FIT-ED mirrors FEU’s values. It’s about giving educators the tools they need to thrive—at scale.”

Today, FIT-ED and FEU are shaping policy, guiding donor strategies, and providing practical solutions to challenges like teacher shortages and uneven training quality. By reversing the usual flow of educational knowledge—from South to North—FEU is proving that local innovation can lead global reform.

This reform journey, rooted in Morayta, reflects a bold vision: making teacher development inclusive, evidence-based, and scalable across the world.
