Globe strengthens push vs online scams

Telecommunications firm Globe Telecom underscored the urgent need for united action against online scams during the Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS) Asia 2025, highlighting its ongoing domestic and international efforts to combat digital fraud.

Globe revealed that one in three Filipinos has been targeted by scams in the past year, with fraud losses hitting US$8.1 billion — equivalent to 1.9 percent of the country’s GDP. Despite the alarming figures, two-thirds of victims fail to report incidents, allowing scams to proliferate.

Speaking at the summit, Globe head of AI and privacy governance and GASA Philippines co-chair Derick Adil emphasized the company’s data-driven approach to fraud prevention. He cited the blocking of over 9 billion scam messages and the recent launch of SMS Scam Shield via the GlobeOne app for Android, which filters fraudulent messages in real-time.

“Scams move at digital speed and don’t stop at borders. Neither should our defenses,” Adil said, calling for stronger cross-border collaboration and intelligence sharing.

On the sidelines of the summit, Globe met with Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC)Undersecretary Alexander Aboy to discuss joint initiatives against cybercrime. The CICC’s participation reflected the Philippine government’s increasing commitment to global cyber diplomacy.

Globe Business VP Glenn Estrella also highlighted the growing threat of scams to enterprises, saying, “Protecting people from scams is no longer optional—it is a duty that cuts across industries and borders.”

Globe’s leadership in anti-fraud initiatives has earned it the role of chairman for the Philippine chapter of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA). The chapter aims to expand public education, intelligence-sharing, and coordinated campaigns by 2026.

The telco also continues to support digital literacy through programs like Digital Thumbprint, Senior Digizen, and Safe Space, aimed at empowering communities to defend against online threats.

GASS Asia 2025 concluded with a strong call for international cooperation, with Globe reaffirming its commitment to shape a safer digital environment through collaboration and innovation.
