Smart expands reach with satellite-to-phone technology

Smart Communications has teamed up with U.S.-based Lynk Global to provide mobile coverage in areas without traditional network signals, using satellites that connect directly to ordinary mobile phones.

The partnership will initially enable users to send and receive text messages and use select mobile applications such as WhatsApp even when cell service is unavailable. Full mobile voice and data connectivity are expected once Lynk’s Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite network is fully deployed in the coming years.

Smart said the rollout will begin with basic messaging and LTE-based app use, aimed at keeping remote communities connected during natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes.

“This isn’t just a technology initiative for us — we believe it will transform lives,” said Menardo G. Jimenez, PLDT chief operating officer and head of network. “We’re trying to be there for all Filipinos.”

Smart’s Network Strategy and Transformation Office head, Radames Zalameda, said both companies will conduct lab tests, roaming setup, and field trials before a phased rollout, focusing on coastal and mountain barangays and key maritime routes.

Lynk Global vice president for Asia Pacific James Alderdice said the collaboration will help deliver reliable satellite connectivity directly to mobile phones, supporting Smart’s mission to keep communities connected “even when disasters strike.”

The initiative adds a disaster-resilient layer to the Philippines’ mobile network, enhancing connectivity, inclusivity, and emergency response across the country.
