Boracay Water and its partners have successfully completed the reforestation and rehabilitation of 20 hectares in the Nabaoy Watershed as part of their flagship sustainability program, Boracay Highland to Ocean (H2O).
Launched in 2019, the “PUNOan ang PalaTUBIGan” program was implemented in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region VI, the Local Government Unit of Malay, and the Nabaoy Forest Farmers Development Association (NAFFDA). The program aimed to restore 20 hectares of the watershed over five years.
As part of the initiative, 36,527 trees were planted, and a livelihood program was introduced for NAFFDA members, enabling local farmers to monitor and maintain the watershed. Boracay Water supported the project with ₱2.1 million in funding.
The Nabaoy River and Watershed provides the main source of clean water for Boracay Island and the municipality of Malay. Beyond reforestation, Boracay Water has implemented river management efforts to maintain water quality, conducted coastal and underwater cleanups, and led educational sessions to raise awareness on solid waste and wastewater management.
“As tourism grows and water demand rises, protecting a sustainable watershed is key to ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for Boracay and Malay,” said Bryan Magallanes, general manager of Boracay Water.
Boracay Water plans to expand the program by adopting an additional 20-hectare area in Sitio Mananga, Barangay Nabaoy, in partnership with DENR, the Malay LGU, Barangay Nabaoy, and NAFFDA.
Boracay Water operates under Manila Water Philippine Ventures and holds a concession from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
