NorthPort ramps up capacity with new high-power cranes

NorthPort, the country’s main domestic gateway operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), has boosted its operations with the arrival of two new Gottwald ESP 5 mobile harbor cranes.

The cranes—each capable of lifting 41 tons with a 46-meter reach—are part of NorthPort’s ongoing modernization program aimed at supporting rising domestic trade volumes. They will be deployed at Pier 10 to strengthen Terminal 2 and work alongside existing quay cranes at Terminal 1. The added lifting power will allow the port to handle more vessels at once and improve berth efficiency.

NorthPort general manager Justin Tolentino said the upgrade reflects the port’s commitment to staying ahead of customer needs. “As trade volumes surge, we remain focused on solutions that enhance efficiency and strengthen reliability,” he noted.

The cranes arrived on November 19 and will undergo testing before entering full operation in December. NorthPort has also ordered four hybrid Mitsui rubber-tired gantry cranes arriving in late 2026. These units significantly reduce fuel use and emissions, aligning with the port’s sustainability goals.

With new equipment and greener technology, NorthPort is gearing up to support growing domestic trade and improve coordination across ICTSI’s Manila terminals.
