DICT crafting a digital version of the now extinct plastic driver’s license card

The government is coming out with a digital version of the driver’s license whose physical plastic card representation has ran out of supply, leaving the motoring public moving on with paper-based renditions devoid of critical security features.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Monday bared a partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to roll out a digital version of the card that the law mandates to be carried at all times by anyone using a motor vehicle.

LTO chief Jay Art Tugade said the digital license serves as an electronic alternative to the physical card integrated as a super app still under development by the DICT.

“The advantage of the digital license is that motorists can present it to law enforcement officers during apprehension. It is equivalent to presenting the physical driver’s license,” Tugade said.

“We also appreciate the way the super app functions similarly to a wallet, containing all government IDs, among other things, within your mobile device,” he added.

Tugade further said the digital version replaces the temporary driver’s license currently printed on paper.

The digital license may also be used for various transactions with the agency, including license and registration renewals and online payments.

Tugade also said the security features of existing driver’s licenses will be integrated into the digital version over and above the security features imbedded in the proposed super app.

He said the LTO-DICT partnership demonstrates the agency’s commitment to digitizing as many services as possible.
