Mobile substation powers MEZ upgrade

Mactan Electric Co., Inc. (MECO) has energized a 3–20 MVA, 13.8-kilovolt mobile substation at the Mactan Economic Zone, boosting reliability and marking a key step in the zone’s green infrastructure push.

Touted as the first mobile substation of its kind in the country, the facility replaces transformers that have been running for over 40 years. The upgrade is expected to improve efficiency, strengthen grid stability, and expand capacity to meet rising demand from industrial locators while reducing the risk of outages.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) called the energization “a vital step” in modernizing MEZ’s power backbone, underscoring the importance of stable electricity in sustaining industrial growth and investment.

The move comes as MEZ ramps up its broader sustainability agenda. Speaking during the March 9, energization ceremony, PEZA director general Tereso Panga outlined upcoming projects, including a thermal oxidation facility for hazardous waste, the rollout of advanced Danish sewage treatment technology, and a proposed microbridge solar project aimed at delivering cleaner, cost-efficient energy to zone locators.

For MECO, the upgrade reinforces its dual focus on reliability and affordability. Company president Douglas Luym said the utility remains committed to providing “reliable, sustainable, and competitively priced electric service,” even as demand accelerates.

With the new substation online and sustainability projects in the pipeline, MEZ is sharpening its edge as a future-ready industrial hub—anchored on resilient, modern, and increasingly green power infrastructure.
