SMC cleanup of Alabang River improves flood control in Muntinlupa

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has cleared a key section of the Alabang River, helping improve water flow and reduce flood risk in nearby communities, roads, and the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

In its latest report, SMC said its Better Rivers PH program has removed 62,363 metric tons of silt and waste from the river. The cleanup covers the stretch from Laguna de Bay to Cupang Bridge and up to the PNR Railway Bridge, with work now moving further upstream toward the Alabang Viaduct.

The project began after the Muntinlupa local government requested assistance following flooding near the Alabang Viaduct in July 2025.

SMC said early results show improved river flow ahead of the rainy season. In addition to dredging, the company is widening parts of the river to increase its capacity and further prevent flooding. These efforts support local government actions, including relocating informal settlers and removing structures that block water flow.

The Alabang River project is part of SMC’s wider river rehabilitation campaign. Since 2020, the Better Rivers PH program has removed more than 9 million metric tons of waste and silt from at least 10 major river systems.

Ongoing cleanups include:

 • Las Piñas and Zapote rivers: 179,558 metric tons removed

 • Parañaque River: 368,414 metric tons removed

 • Rivers in Laguna: 93,550 metric tons removed

 • Tullahan River (Novaliches): 20,536 metric tons removed

 • Tanza River (Navotas): 5,166 metric tons removed

 • Tabang River (Bulacan): 29,488 metric tons removed

As of March 22, the program has rehabilitated 184.33 kilometers of rivers across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

SMC said it will continue working with local governments to improve flood control and restore waterways.
