Alsons Consolidated Resources (ACR), through Alsons Power, will transform its 55-megawatt diesel power plant in Alabel, Sarangani into a 98.7-megawatt solar power facility as part of its renewable energy expansion.
The project will be developed in two phases starting in the second quarter of the year. Alsons Power said the conversion of the Southern Philippines Power Corp. (SPPC) plant will help maximize existing infrastructure, speed up development, and support the country’s renewable energy goals.
For the first phase, the company signed an engineering, procurement, and construction deal with Sinohydro Corp. Ltd. and POWERCHINA Philippines Corp., subsidiaries of global infrastructure firm POWERCHINA. The first phase will cover a 45-megawatt solar project.
Alsons Power CEO Antonio Miguel Alcantara said the project marks a major step in shifting the company’s fossil fuel assets into renewable energy facilities and strengthening energy security.
The first phase is one of the winning projects under the government’s fourth Green Energy Auction Program (GEA4), securing a long-term power offtake agreement. The company aims to complete the project ahead of the September 2027 delivery target.
Development work for the second phase is also ongoing, including plans for a battery energy storage system (BESS) to improve reliability and efficiency.
Once completed, the 98.7-megawatt solar facility is expected to provide electricity to nearly 104,000 homes in Mindanao.
ACR currently operates power plants across the Visayas and Mindanao with a total installed capacity of about 515 megawatts from coal, diesel, and renewable energy sources.
