US backs Luzon Corridor, energy partnership push

The US has reaffirmed its support for the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC), signaling that economic cooperation is becoming an increasingly important pillar of the longstanding US-Philippines alliance alongside defense and security ties.

According to a June 5 readout from the US Department of State, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro discussed a range of bilateral priorities, including economic development, energy security, and regional stability.

A key topic was the continued development of the Luzon Economic Corridor, a flagship initiative designed to improve connectivity, modernize infrastructure, strengthen logistics networks, and attract investment across major economic centers in Luzon.

The project has emerged as one of the most visible economic undertakings under growing US-Philippine cooperation, with policymakers viewing it as a catalyst for industrial expansion, supply chain diversification, and long-term investment growth.

The renewed US backing comes as the Philippines seeks to position itself as a more attractive destination for global manufacturers looking to diversify production bases and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities in the region.

Energy security also figured prominently in the discussions, with Rubio reaffirming Washington’s interest in working with Manila to address regional energy challenges.

Improving energy reliability remains a critical prerequisite for the the Philippines to sustain economic growth, expand industrial capacity, and attract large-scale investments to strategic development zones.

Beyond economic matters, the two officials exchanged views on the Philippines’ upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN and ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea, underscoring the broad scope of bilateral engagement.

The meeting comes as both countries commemorate significant milestones in 2026, including 80 years of diplomatic relations and 75 years as treaty allies.

While security cooperation continues to anchor the relationship, the renewed emphasis on the Luzon Economic Corridor reflects how economic resilience, infrastructure development, and energy cooperation are becoming increasingly central to the next phase of the US-Philippines partnership.
