Insurance industry powers up for EV boom

The electric vehicle revolution is no longer a distant prospect. From compact city cars to premium sport utility vehicles, EVs are becoming a more common sight on Philippine roads. Yet while vehicle technology has advanced rapidly, insurance products have often struggled to keep pace.

That gap is beginning to narrow as Malayan Insurance introduces dedicated coverage for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), reflecting how the financial services sector is adapting to the country’s evolving mobility landscape.

The move comes as sales of EVs continue to gain momentum, supported by government incentives, expanding charging infrastructure, and a growing selection of models from global manufacturers. Industry players increasingly recognize that insuring an EV requires a different approach from covering conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.

Malayan Insurance’s upgraded AutoMaster coverage includes battery diagnostics, specialized towing services, protection for home charging units, and battery-specific indemnity provisions. These features address some of the most significant concerns among EV owners, particularly the high cost of battery replacement and repair.

“Electric vehicles represent the future of transportation, but they also require a different approach to protection,” said Juan Enrico Soller, project development manager of Malayan Insurance. “By expanding AutoMaster to include specialized EV coverage, we’re ensuring that our customers have access to insurance solutions that are relevant, comprehensive, and ready for the roads ahead.”

Eligible models include vehicles from BYD, Tesla, BMW, Volvo Cars and Chery, among others.

The development highlights an often-overlooked aspect of the EV transition. Consumer adoption depends not only on vehicle availability and charging stations, but also on supporting services that reduce uncertainty for buyers.

As the Philippine EV market accelerates, insurers are increasingly being called upon to innovate alongside automakers. For many drivers considering the switch, comprehensive and specialized protection could become as important as range, charging speed, or purchase price in making the move to electric mobility.
