Julie’s Bakeshop powers sustainability via smarter energy strategy

Julie’s Bakeshop is taking a bigger bite out of its energy costs after tapping Vivant Energy Corp.’s retail electricity arm, COREnergy, to power its commissary operations, underscoring how energy procurement is becoming a competitive advantage for Philippine manufacturers.

The Cebu-based bakery chain has shifted to COREnergy under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program, giving it greater flexibility to manage electricity costs while advancing its sustainability goals.

The move reflects a growing realization among manufacturers that energy is no longer just another utility expense but a strategic lever for improving profitability and resilience.

For food producers operating energy-intensive facilities, stable and competitively priced electricity can make a meaningful difference as businesses grapple with rising commodity prices, labor costs, and logistics expenses.

Julie’s commissaries, which produce the breads and pastries that have become staples of Filipino breakfasts and merienda, require continuous and reliable power to keep production running efficiently.

By optimizing its electricity procurement through COREnergy’s Power Choice program, the company expects to improve operational efficiency while managing one of its largest controllable operating costs.

The shift also reinforces Julie’s broader sustainability agenda. Lower power costs can free up capital for investments in energy-efficient equipment, production upgrades, and future expansion, creating a virtuous cycle where operational savings help finance greener operations.

The partnership illustrates how sustainability is increasingly becoming a business decision rather than simply an environmental commitment.

Companies are discovering that reducing energy waste often delivers a second dividend by strengthening margins and improving long-term competitiveness.

For Julie’s Bakeshop, going green means more than lowering its carbon footprint. It is also about building a business resilient enough to navigate inflationary pressures while continuing to deliver affordable, quality baked goods to Filipino consumers.

As more companies seek greater control over operating expenses, energy procurement is emerging as a boardroom priority rather than a back-office function.

For manufacturers, the biggest power play may no longer be generating more electricity, but buying it more strategically.
