Nebraska eyes bigger farm partnership with Philippines

The Philippines could unlock fresh opportunities to modernize its agriculture sector as the US state of Nebraska seeks to expand cooperation in livestock, biofuels, and agricultural technology to help strengthen the country’s food security and rural economy.

During a meeting in Washington, D.C., Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez explored partnerships that could boost farm productivity, attract agribusiness investments, and support the country’s long-term agricultural development.

Among the priority areas were poultry production, advanced pork genetics, feedlot operations, higher-value ethanol, and biofuels, sectors where Nebraska is regarded as a global leader.

One of the most immediate opportunities lies in the swine industry. Governor Pillen said Nebraska’s advanced pork genetics program could help the Philippines rebuild its hog population after African swine fever decimated local herds, improving breeding efficiency and supporting efforts to stabilize domestic pork supply.

The talks also identified broader collaboration in poultry and sugarcane, with technology transfer, research partnerships, and private-sector investments seen as potential drivers of higher productivity. Expanding cooperation in ethanol and biofuels could likewise support the Philippines’ renewable energy ambitions while creating additional markets for agricultural producers.

Momentum could build later this month as a Nebraska trade delegation is scheduled to visit the Philippines from July 25 to 30 to explore investment opportunities and hold discussions with government agencies and agribusiness companies.

The planned mission signals growing interest among US agricultural producers in the Philippine market, particularly as the country seeks to modernize its farm sector, improve food resilience, and diversify sources of technology and investment.

If the discussions translate into commercial projects, the partnership could strengthen agricultural supply chains, accelerate the recovery of the livestock industry, and create new income opportunities for Filipino farmers while deepening economic ties with one of America’s leading agricultural states.
