GSM Bar Academy shapes world-class Filipino bartenders over 12 years

Bartending has evolved from a temporary side job into a respected career path for many young Filipinos, requiring deep product knowledge, technical skill, creativity, physical stamina, and strong people abilities—qualities that have made Filipino professionals highly sought after across the global hospitality sector. Since opening in 2014 at the TESDA Women’s Center in Taguig City, the GSM Bar Academy, established by Ginebra San Miguel Inc. to mark the brand’s 180th anniversary, has been training skilled graduates ready for opportunities both in the Philippines and overseas.

Run in partnership with TESDA, the three-month intensive program uses fully equipped facilities including a professional bar laboratory and flairtending gym to teach core bartending techniques, beverage preparation, customer service, professional conduct, and responsible alcohol service. Graduates earn the TESDA Bartending Program National Certificate II, meeting strict industry standards for immediate employment. Over 12 years, alumni have secured roles in premium bars, hotels, resorts, cruise ships, and restaurants worldwide, while others have launched their own food and beverage ventures.

Success stories from the academy highlight its life-changing impact: 2025 graduate Ann Rose Tapar now works at top Bonifacio Global City establishments after gaining skills and confidence through the training. Hospitality management graduate JP Peñaflor became head bartender and a competition winner before joining a five-star hotel bar in BGC. Cherry Galit, who left school to support her family, used the academy’s technopreneur track to launch a thriving mobile bar business that now employs fellow graduates. Former corporate finance worker Angela Felarca meanwhile found a new passion as the first female bartender at a high-end events mobile bar firm.

The academy has earned high praise, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. describing it as a “national model for public-private partnership in technical-vocational education” following his 2025 visit. Trainer Shella Bawar, now an ASEAN National Master Trainer, also received recognition for overseeing one of the highest employment rates among programs at the TESDA Women’s Center, affirming the academy’s core mission: turning skills into livelihoods, careers, and lasting personal fulfillment.
